Why is the full blockchain required, effectively forever?

I do understand that every block is validated in terms of the blocks before it by way of the previous block's hash, all the way back to the genesis block. However, could the protocol be modified such that the blockchain is a sliding window over the most recent N number of blocks? How likely is it that some block from 1 year ago later turns out to be invalid?

Chat online using Bitcoin addresses?

I was surfing on the web and trying to find a chat app that uses Bitcoin address instead of phone numbers or any other identificator. I finally found: https://bluegramm.com which seems to be a startup working on this field. Although I ended with what I want (a project that offers that) I don't know if I missing something. Do you know about ay other project on this field? and also I have another question, what are your thougths on this technology? Would you find it useful?
