If Cryptocurrency offers anonymity, why is it considered by forensic professionals to be the best currency for fighting illicit transactions?

A paper by titled An Analysis of Bitcoin’s Use in Illicit Finance discusses how Cryptocurrency is considered by forensic professionals to be the best currency for fighting illicit transactions. In terms of it being digital this makes sense, and of course the public ledger would showcase all transactions, but aren’t the identities of those transacting hidden cryptographically?

How to extract all info for a public address from a local full node’s db?

I recently started running bitcoind on a local Debian host, and I am still learning how to use the information in the local copy of the bitcoin blockchain. I would like to extract all the information for one or more public bitcoin addresses currently available in the full node locally1. I recently learned that, contrary to my initial expectation, bitcoin core is not suitable for performing this sort of query. Therefore, I went back to Google, but I've come up empty 2. Hence I'm posting my question here. Specifically, I would like to know what software (preferably in the form…

Address reuse, cold storage and private keys

I was going through some old posts regarding address reuse and came across a few remarks I wasn't aware of, and want to make sure I understood correctly. I knew address reuse wasn't the best for privacy reasons, but I learned today that apparently it's also not good for security IF you've spend your bitcoins. Let's consider the following situation: I have a brand new hardware wallet, generated a new seed with it, alongside a new address. I send from an exchange 1 BTC to it, and I decide to use this address as cold storage, meaning I'll regularly send…

Is it possible to identify the exchange or type of wallet used with an address

When I first started my journey in crypto I didn't keep adequate records and have misplaced some funds. I have a receiving address and need to associate it to an exchange or possibly wallet type as I am not sure which it is. If I can identify a direction I should be able to re-engineer my login. At the risk on giving away the farm here the address is 1EqL6gfniCDQkLY7zZm6S24GSt4AyZvAYK Thanks in advance for any help.

Public key management

There is something i am not sure to understand on bitcoin private/public keys and addresses. A new bitcoin user "U" first generates a private key. He can compute several public keys from this private key. When he wants to receive bitcoins, the user should generate an address. I do not understand if this address is a public key or if it is 2 different things. If my "U" user should receive bitcoin from 10 different people, he can generate a single common address for this 10 peoples but they will be able to see "U" balance, and see that he…

Is there a way to a get a list of all address tags from Blockchain.com? (either by scrapping or API)

I am looking to get the most complete list of address association with entity names. I am thinking blockchain.com must have a good one but here https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tags?filter=8&offset=500 you can only search by address or name and not get a complete list. Is there a way to get it? Does another website give access to a good list? Thank you

Why is BIP32 root key different for different standards(purposes)?

When generating key on https://iancolemen.com/bip39/, the BIP32 Root Key changes as I change the derivation path tab, e.g. BIP32, BIP44, BIP39 etc. Why is this the case? Isn't BIP32 Root Key the m at the beginning of the derivation path and the different standards are subsequent purpose that should not affect the root key? Contrary to the above, when I generate addresses with the following code in go, the master key printed always matches the BIP32 Root Key on iancolemen.com. And changing the purpose does not affect the address generated in the end, it is always a BIP32(legacy) address, instead…
